There is always a certain unbridled performance attitude that makes rear-wheel drive vehicles so invigorating. Lamborghini enthusiasts would have surely noticed the conspicuous absence of a feisty rear-wheel drive Italian performance offering. A two-wheeled drivetrain option had last been available for street customers on the 2014 Gallardo. Due to the brand’s ongoing push for all-wheel drive supercars, the only two-wheel drive Lamborghini available in the 2015 model line-up has been a race purpose-only Huracan LP 620-2 Super Trofeo. Debuting at the LA Auto Show, just ahead of the holiday season, the linage of the rear-wheel drive Lamborghini will live on. Promoted as a fun-to-drive version of their more accessible supercar, the Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 is a storming new entry-level machine.
Roaring forth with the pedigree of great rear-wheel drive Lamborghinis such as the Miura and the Countach, the Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 shares its romantically kinetic overall exterior design with its all-wheel drive counterpart. Despite a similar appearance to the current Huracan LP-610-4, considerable re-engineering of the supercar was made for the rear-wheel drive variant. Weight distribution of the Lamborghini Huracan was shifted with a 60 percent bias towards the rear section while the overall weight of the sports car is roughly 3,062 pounds (about 72.7 pounds lighter than the all-wheel drive model).
The suspension and steering for the Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 have been reworked specifically to conform to the new drivetrain characteristics. Compared to the rear-wheel drive Gallardo this vehicle succeeds, the torsional stiffness with the Huracan is 50 percent greater. Three selectable driving modes and a sophisticated sensor system placed on the supercar Rapidly-adapting Magneto Rheological Suspension and Lamborghini Dynamic Steering is optional with the new rear-wheel drive supercar. Mounted to Kari 19-inch wheels, the Huracan LP 580-2 is propelled through grip of Pirelli P Zero tires specifically suited to the rear-wheel drive setup.
Noted in the numerical description, the Huracan LP 580-2 receives a retuned version of Lamborghini’s naturally-aspirated, 5.2-liter V-10 engine. Rated at 580 horsepower, the rear-wheel drive mid-engined supercar is provided with stubborn torque production. Generating 540 Newton meters (translating to 398.3 foot pounds), the powerplant behind the new Lamborghini Huracan delivers 75 percent of torque at 1,000 rpm. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission called Lamborghini Doppia Frizione.
With a 22-horsepower disadvantage compared to the all-wheel drive version of the Huracan, the rear-wheel drive Huracan LP 580-2 is by no means a slowpoke. Acceleration time for the Lamborghini to launch from 0 to 62 miles per hour is measured in a mere 3.4 seconds equal to the all-wheel drive Huracan LP 610-4 Spyder. When opening to Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 wide open, top speed for the Italian machine is rated at 199 miles per hour.
Affordable by Lamborghini standards, the European suggested retail price for the Huracan LP 580-2 is 150,000 Euros including tax. More than 35,000 Euros less than the all-wheel drive model, this should indicate the supercar will arrive stateside for around $200,000.
